IPL: Turmoil at the Bangalore Royal Challengers

Rumors surfaced yesterday, the day when IPL opened its trading window for the transfer of players that Vijay Mallya the owner of the Bangalore Royal Challengers franchisee was putting up his whole team for sale. This in turn sparked off the speculation that Vijay Mallya was putting his franchisee for sale.

Mallya put these speculations to rest by issuing a swift clarification “I wish to clarify that the Bangalore Royal Challengers are not up for sale and neither do we seek to transfer a majority of our current players”.

He added that there was a possibility of swapping players to achieve a better balance of the team.

Now this has sparked of another round of speculation about who are these players. Intriguingly the speculation seems to surround only the foreign players. BRC has Dale Steyn, Mark Boucher, Ross Taylor, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Misbah-ul Haq, Jacques Kallis and Nathan Bracken.

Kallis and Bracken along with one other player are said to be the players up for sale. Selling Kallis is a sound decision as he not only performed poorly during the last edition but in the just concluded domestic Twenty20 tournament in South Africa he was found wanting.

However, there is no percentage in selling Bracken. Bracken has put in some stirring performances in the Australian league and regarded as one of the leading ODI bowler’s in the world. He could also come in handy if the proposal to play a part of the tournament in England comes through.

In all probability it could be Chanderpaul due to his unavailability and the yet to be unnamed player could be Misbah, a fall out of the recent Mumbai terror attacks.

However observers believe that Mallya and the Bangalore Royal Challengers should focus on getting rid of deadweights like Kumble, Joshi etc., (Dravid escapes the ignominy by virtue of being the icon player). They have done nothing in the past and are unlikely to do so in the future.

Do you agree that Mallya should focus on getting rid of Kumble and the like?

I think Bangalore has one of the tougher challenges. I think the message they are trying to send out is that they are willing to trade anybody for another player of their choice?
In the Feb auction, I think some of the teams will push the price of KP and FF so high that the teams that really want them can pick up only them...

RS,

You are right.Mallya is saddled with a lot of dead weights.

He needs to prune it to become competitive.

Zaheers name is also being mentioned.

It was surprising that players like Joshi, Arunkumar and other Karnataka veterans were given contracts.

They will have to be purged. But who is going to buy them? Even for Kumble, it will be hard to find another team.

R,

Why Zaheer? Last time he was coming out of an injury. I doubt whether those rumors are true.

RGB,

Either Dravid completely misread the Twenty20 game or he was paying off his dues.:)

I agree there will be no suitors for players like Kumble.Mallya is saddled with them for 1 more year.
