Hayden's Halcyon days are behind him.

Mathew Hayden's failure in Perth yesterday, where he made 12 before falling to Makhaya Ntini has everyone speculating about his immediate future. Although the Boxing Day Test specialist is a certainty for the second Test against South Australia, rumours fuelled by a Justin Langer interview yesterday, has cast doubts over his inclusion for the Ashes series.

As everyone is aware, Hayden is going through a miserable run of form. It has been nearly a year since his last test hundred against India and in addition, his return from an Achilles heel injury has seen him averaging a low 22. This has made his detractors wonder whether his trademark aggression (he had 3 boundaries in his innings of 12) is a result of desperation.

Like all great batsmen he may just make a fool of his detractors by scoring huge hundreds again, however there is no denying the fact that his repeated failures and the availability of talented players like Shaun Marsh is making his future appear increasingly murkier.
