IPL - Three more teams in 2011?

According to the BCCI President the 2011 edition of IPL may well feature 3 more teams.
Pune is virtually assured of a team. The other two could be from Ahmedabad/Vadodra (Gujarat) and possibly a team from Noida/Kanpur/Lucknow(U.P.)

This rises a big question. What happens if the present set of teams signs up all available foreign players? How will these new teams compete against the older ones?

There's a restriction on the number of foreign players in a squad I believe. 8? Not sure if it was strictly followed though.

However even if it wasn't, it is quite simple.. you've got 8 international teams + bangladesh + zimbabwe.

If you take only the 8 that gives you 8x11=88 regular internationals + 8x4=32 international squad members. Approximately. This excludes players like McGrath, Warne, Pomersbach, Mohd. Hafeez, etc all those who played the IPL without being regular internationals. There will be more in the future...

So the 120 internationals + Int'ls who are not regulars + bangladesh players + Zimbabwe players + Indian domestic stars... That is quite a large pool.

You could have 20 teams!

Q,
I agree that the numbers can be made up.
What about quality. Not every team can turn from nothing to RR.

Well isn't that what we were saying about RR before the IPL?

I feel 20-20 is the kind of game where anyone can surprise anyone.

You had the best of quality at the Deccan Chargers - Gilly, Gibbs, Afridi, Symonds yet what happened?

So I think even if you put together an XI from India's domestic stars and pit them against an international side in a 20-20 match - it will be a close contest.

We are talking abt new IPL teams when there is a plan to have some T20 matches in dubai and sharjah. The money involved I gather is 750mil dlrs over a period of 10 yrs. Then u have the Stanford matches. Will IPL stand the competition.

This whole IPL thing is getting over the top. Why not add Koyilpatti and Usilampatti also? If there are too many teams, ppl will lose focus and interest. The obsessed game follower that I am, I followed less than half of the IPL games, but that might be just me. Who cares abt the ppl anyway. It's all abt the $s. I agree with what has been said abt T20 being a mercurial thing, one day a winner could be beaten by a seemingly underdog side.

Ott,
Why Pune is assured of a team?

We need a team from Coimbatore...

R,

I am with you on this. I do believe that IPL or the T20 tournaments will collapse under their own weight.

VMM,

Overkill. Agreed.

a fan,

It is earmarked for Anil Ambani.

Slogger,

A warm welcome to you.

I see that you haven't lost touch with the happenings in India.

About CBE, I will ask my dear friend Niranjan Shah to put in a good word to Modi. :)

I think all the current players contracts is for 3 years only - so may be an option to get good (famous - crowd pulling) international players for the new teams as well.

LVISS said...

I foresee a scenario where the players will roam free as freelance cricketers signing up to any team they fancy. There wont be any controlling body and those who have the money will conduct the matches. They will attract crowd by adding some entertainments. Am I being scepticl?
rs I think the contract can be terminated by either side with due notice.

Ott,
I thought Ahmedabad is the preferred one for Anil Ambani...

Regarding CBE,one more vote from my side:)

Viswanathan said...

RS,

That's a good point. It will mean that the players will have more choices rather than the other way around.:)

Viswanathan said...

R,

In a way your freelance roving players is true. Players like Pollck and Gibbs are now playing for 3 different Twenty20 teams.

a fan,

My reply was based on an three month old article. I could be wrong.

Didn't know you came from CBE.:)
