Oval Test result to be annulled?

In a way the Oval Test match is a blot on both ICC and the PCB. The pigheadedness of Hair and a Inzamam's futile attempt to defend Pakistan's reputation resulted in the first and as yet only forfeiture in the annals of Test Cricket.

No wonder the PCB is keen to see the decision reversed. With the help of ECB it is hoping to annul or change the result to a draw or an abandoned match.

Whatever be the unfairness of the the earlier decision, is it right to change and set a precedent?

i'd like the test to resume from where they left it.

Its just politics. Pakistan did not come out to play and they behaved like little children caught tampering with the ball. Their actions demonstrated their guilt -- to me anyway.

NC,

That's a good one. :)

Rob,

Yep I agree they were petulant. However, that is not a indication of guilt.

In the same breath it is difficult to condone Hair's behaviour.

I am not sure he did anything wrong. He saw the ball had been tampered with, Doctrove agreed, and so the correct action was taken.

Rob,
Hair did not do anything wrong. He just went by the letter of the law.

However, the ECB has come around to accepting no tampering was done.

Now what exactly did happen? :)

They shd resume the match at the same time on the same day and month next year with the same umpires.. Now what will they do after reversing the decision --write off as a draw.
If the umpires have acted according to the laws it shd be left as such .

This blog is full of hateful people who just don't want to miss their oppurtunity to criticise Pakistan. What Hair did was purely discriminatory act, there has no camera footage that shows anywhere any Pakistani player has tampered the ball. They did their best to seach such a footage. Anyway, Hair was banned after doing this that means he was wrong. Had it been India Hair career would have been forever.

By the way, there is no law that if an Umpire feels someone is tampering the ball. The umpire has to actually see it which obviously Hair didn't. The commentators at the time Ian Botham and Mike Arthurton strongly criticized Hair's decision because they knew Hair was wrong. Hair wrongfully accused Pakistan of doing something which they were not doing then he punished them for voicing a complaint. Of course the match should be anuulled even then it is a loss to Pakistan because they were in winning position at the time.

Anon,
Apologies if this post offended your sensibilities.
However, I hasten to add, that you have perhaps over-reacted.
Kindly read the post and the comments in full.
You will realise that we have spoken ill of the ICC and not of Pakistan cricket.

You are right. if the same had happened to India the consequences to Hair would have been terrible. :)
Cheers and thanks for stopping by.

R,
The umpires acted according to the law, but the question is did they act according to the situation?

Pakistan didn't want to play, so they lost on forfeit. The ball-tampering issue is irrelevant. The umpires made the correct decision in awarding the Test to England.

It's ridiculous to change results after the fact like the PCB wants to do.

Viswanathan said...

David,
You are absolutely correct in saying that the ball tampering issue had nothing to do with the result.

Q said...

What difference does it make anymore?

Viswanathan said...

Q,
Is that a philosophical question?

Q said...

Haha, I am no philosopher Ott, but seriously whether the result of that series reads England won 3-0 or England won 2-0, doesn't make any difference.

I like NC's suggestion the best.

Viswanathan said...

Q,
I agree.

LVISS said...

The situation was not umpires making.

Viswanathan said...

R,
Absolutely, it was not their making.

Nevertheless, you can't blame the Pakistan team as they were rightfully indignant.
