Beau Casson the 20 th left -arm wrist -spinner

Interesting bit of cricket trivia surrounding Beau Casson. If he debuts for Australia in the third and final Test against West Indies in Barbados, he becomes the 20 th left-arm wrist-spinner to play Test cricket.

BTW, what is the difference between a left-arm spinner and a left-arm wrist-spinner?

Left arm spinner doesnt use the wrist to impart spin I suppose. like Brad Hogg.. Something similar to confusing ourselves with inswing outswing with a hybrid reverse swing. They want to micro divide players into so many categories so that they will have some thing to chew in the commentary box.The word leg break bowler has become obsolete. The operative word is spin whether u do it with wrist or arm or ass.

R,

Its all spin, isn't it?

Left arm spinner is a finger spinner guys... one who bowls off spin with the left arm - like a left handed Harbhajan or Saqlain.

Left arm wrist spinner is a left arm leg spinner - something like Hogg, Paul Adams, Bevan, etc.

Q,
Left arm spinner - Left arm Off- spinner
Left arm wrist spinner - Left arm Leg Spinner.

Correct?

Thats correct Ottayan but they can't call them that because a leg spin bowler spins it from leg to off, while a left arm leg spinner will spin it from off to leg for the right handed batsman.

Same for left arm off spinner.

Q,
Just to muddy the waters further, what would you call a left arm wrist spinner who is bowling to left handed batsmen?

A left arm leg spinner :-)

It will spin from leg to off for the lefty, thus a leg spin.

We have a middle spinner in sachin whose deliveries turn either way.How do we describe him?

All spinners turn it both ways Ravindran... a leg spinner's other one is called a googly, while the off spinner's is called a doosra.

Sachin bowls the off spin, the leg spin, and the googly. As does Afridi.

Ajantha Mendis the Lankan is a unique one - he bowls everything from a leg spin, googly, off spin, doosra, and some other variations and that too all with the fingers, no wrist involved.

Here's how Cricinfo classifies these spinners:

Sachin: Right-arm offbreak, Legbreak googly (http://content-gulf.cricinfo.com/india/content/player/35320.html)

Afridi: Right-arm medium, Legbreak googly (http://content-gulf.cricinfo.com/pakistan/content/player/42639.html)

Mendis: Right-arm slow-medium (http://content-gulf.cricinfo.com/srilanka/content/player/268739.html)

Very strange..
