Harbhajan escapes a ‘life’ ban

The Board of Control for Cricket in India banned Harbhajan Singh for a paltry five one day Internationals.

After making ‘shocking’ statements, the Inquiry Commissioner Sudhir Nanavati submitted his report to the BCCI President yesterday, who in turn let off Harbhajan Singh lightly.

Interestingly, Lalchand Rajput, the coach of the Mumbai Indians reportedly found applauding Harbhajan’s indiscipline, he escaped without a reprimand. Funnily, Sreesanth received a stern warning.

For the record, we were expecting a life ban for Harbhajan and a minimum of five one-day match’s ban for Sreesanth.

Needless to add, we are disappointed.

I think the punishment is commensurate with the crime..11 matches in the IPL and 5 ODIs on top of that is more than adequate punishment for the slap.

I'm with Homer here, he hasn't killed anyone! I was banned for three games for throwing my bat at my captain. If I'd slapped him, I'd have only had a one day ban.

Homer/Suave,

I would have agreed with you both if it was a one -off incident. But look at his history. He has been indisciplined through out his career.

well, more than the quantum of the punishment it's the BCCI modus operandi which intrigues me. BCCI had
decided to let Harbhajan off the hook with a milder punishement, after he already copped a lot by being barred from the remainder of the IPL and losing nearly Rs 3 crore. So while the IPL Governing Council wen by the ICC Code of Conduct, BCCI contrived a way out and decided to invoke its very own Rule 3.2.1 of the BCCI Regulations for Players, officials etc and handed down this 5-match ban.
Trust BCCI to mangle laws and find ways to suit its will

U can bet he will never be punished even if he commits a similar act. U heard evryone were pleading for a lighter punishment. The whole thing beats me.

Som,

BCCI has failed to uphold the ICC regulations.

R, It is a shame that he has been simply let off.

Interested in how Bhajji reacts to the Aussies (esp Ponting) later this year

Som,

The IPL was to play by the ICC rulebook.. Did the BCCI accede to the same?

Ott,

How is Harbhajan's indiscipline relevant to the discussion?

The only instance of indiscipline, if you want to call it that, was when he tore up the menu at the NCA because the food was not in keeping with the nourishment required by the athletes.

The only other instances of indiscipline have been when he has opened his mouth ( to speak in support of Ganguly or against Chappell) for which he has been pulled up by the BCCI.

If you are going to give me his ICC rap sheet, how much crdence do you attach to a list given by a body that has been notoriously inconsistent in its rulings on player discipline?

Mike Denness, Mike Proctor anyone?

Cheers

Homer,

I am not talking about rule books if you see he has consistently pushed the envelope when it comes to his behaviour.

Frankly, after slap - gate, I am ashamed of defending him during the 'monkey' controversy.

This incident has made me think Symonds is a saint. :)

Rule books like records in cricket are meant to be broken.
