I am not a fan of Vaughan and consider both his Captaincy and his batting over rated. Being a conspiracy theorist, I suspect ‘a purple patch’ behind his reputation.
Here are my suspicions:
I am of the opinion a batting ‘purple patch’ enhanced his reputation as batsmen and culminated in him being anointed the Wisden Player of the Year.
Similarly, the Ashes win (a purple patch of colossal proportions) contributed hugely to his reputation as a Captain. Incidentally being British (another purple patch?) furthered his reputation.
Now it turns out that facts support my suspicions. For starters check out his batting statistics:
Career average 43.42Average peaked during 31st Test v South Africa (Edgbaston 2004) 51.57
For those unconvinced by my ‘purple patch theory, I offer further substantiation below.
In 82 innings since he has scored2,901 runs averaging 38.17One 100 in last 18 inningsMore than 20 – 11 times
It is obvious that his batting reputation was made during a ‘purple patch’ and since then he has been basking in it.
As for his Captaincy, there has been no significant victory since the Ashes.
Now do you agree that a ‘purple patch’ is behind his reputation?
