Test Cricket is in the terminal stage

After much chin wagging the wise men have declared that Test cricket is in the terminal stage and pointed to IPL as the cause.

As there is no antidote for IPL, they conclude that it is time for all of us to face the truth and let it die a natural death.

In their eagerness to blame, the wise men appear to overlooked the fact that the real reason is the mere pointlessness of the format

I made a similar rant but I still feel the format has not become irrelevant yet. Only thing is, they have to streamline things, weed out the parasites and schedule it right.

Som,

I agree that the format is still relevant. However, they have wrongly concluded the IPL is the main cause.

I think they should seriously look at the pitches.

The IPL is run by private organizations who are answerable to their shareholders and risk their brand. Test cricket is also run by private organizations but are answerable to ABSOLUTELY NO ONE and have nothing to protect. Not even their respective governments (in most cases at least...including India).

Where is the incentive to reform cricket? And if money was to be made in Test Cricket, a Reliance or a SRK would have invested in it. Its a format that will die as a commercial asset. It will exist for centuries on end and continue to get more and more irrelevant.

Cricket has been run by a private cartel. Now that there is competition the cartel does not know how to respond. Actually legalizing drugs will have a similar effect on drug cartels. We may just have a good case study here...

G,

You nailed it. They run it as if it is their fiefdom and have squandered it.

West Indies Cricket is a recent example of this.

Yes, legalising IPL would do. However, I intrigued why a 100 year old game is feeling the heat of a 2 year old upstart.

GOLANDAAZ IS SPOT ON. AS HE SAYS TEST CRICKET WILL BE KEPT ON DESPITE ITS WANING APPEAL.
ONCE U BEGIN TO ENJOY A QUICKIE ANY THING THAT TAKES MORE TIME WILL LOSE ITS CHARM. THIS IS WHAT IS HAPPENING TO TEST CRICKET.
LEGALISING IPL? IT HAS NOT BEEN BANNED ANYWHERE. IT WILL UNDERGO SOME CHANGE AS IT MOVES ON.
