Is it the sign of the times?

crossroad,australian cricket Image by sandman

All these years’ Australian cricket teams were largely immune to umpiring errors. Even if they were prey to a couple, the Australians imperiously shrugged it off and continued their winning ways. Notably their opponents bore the brunt of them.

Adding to their legend a theory made the rounds that as Australia were truly dominant; the umpires sub consciously favoured them. If one were to take what happened in the first two tests of the present series, then those days of enjoying the benefits of umpiring errors are over.

Consider this, Mathew Hayden was given caught and bowled at Perth, when the ball clearly bounced of his pads. Mike Hussey was also erroneously given out caught to a ball that bounced off his helmet during the second test. Both these decisions stymied not only the batsmen but also Australia’s quest for a win.

Impartial observers like this blogger believe that these umpiring errors indicate that Australia’s dominant ways are over and it is time to bring out the bubbly.

Can we call Cheteshwar Pujara as India’s Mr. Cricket?

If one were to consider the following statistics the title of India’s Mr. Cricket is apt.

Last year he hit 807 runs, with 3 hundreds in just 8 Ranji Trophy games. This season his form is ominous. He slammed 2 triple hundreds in the Col CK Nayadu Trophy and at present is cruising at 867 runs with 4 hundreds in eight games.

Indeed, he is India’s Mr. Cricket. This is the right time to throw him into the big league and learn whether he can swim.

Who will be the first?

Under a new anti-doping code announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC), cricketers may be tested even when they are playing in non ICC competitions.

In fact, the ICC has made it incumbent on cricketers to be available for testing at any time of the day.

Reports indicate that all full ICC members and the top six associates have agreed to be WADA-compliant by July 1.

This development brings up an interesting question, which cricketer will gain the dubious distinction of being the first victim?

The death knell was rung at Sydney.

Death Knell,Australian Cricket, The capitulation by Australia started in the Sydney Test. Until then the Australian cricketers were supremely confident that they are unbeatable and hence believed whatever they did was correct.

However, the boorishness displayed by them during Sydney Test drew the ire of the cricket aficionados around the world. It was clear then that the Australian team was so insular that they failed to hear the silence that celebrated their whoops of joy.

The death knell was rung when their own compatriots spewed vitriol over their behaviour. To their dismay, they were taken to task for what until then they were lauded for, i.e., their hard-nosed professionalism. Australia as a nation berated their behaviour.

A disappointed Ponting and gang were asked to look in the mirror and what they saw shattered their confidence. What they thought was righteous behaviour revealed itself as arrogance, what they thought was gamesmanship revealed itself as cheating, what they thought was their own good clean fun (sledging) showed itself as uncouth behaviour.

Being intelligent men, they disliked what the mirror showed them. Diffidence replaced their confidence, when others raised their voices; they lost their tongue, when others made bold and looked them in their eye they blinked. From then on, it has been a tale of a team that lost its way.

So Sydney was where it all started and the Indians the first to strike the blow. The South Africans have only grounded the rubble.

Will the South African’s choke?

Australia v South Africa, 2nd Test, Melbourne
The South African’s are on the verge of making history. Their cricket team is poised to nail the series, an achievement that has eluded them in the last four series.

Needing another 153 runs to win, the South Africans are indeed favorites to win this test match and thus win a series in Australia for the first time since the dismantling of the apartheid.

However, the South Africans last won a Test series against Australia in 1969-70. Since then they have won just four of 24 Tests against Australia before this series.

Can South Africa overcome the burden of history and rid themselves of the tag of chokers by winning this match?

The Vaughan fixation

gutted :(Image by gin soak via FlickrImage by gin soak via Flickr
It is a make or break day for Michael Vaughan.

The English selectors will select the squad for the West Indies tour starting on February 4 today. If we are to go by the reports emanating out of England, the West Indies tour is a trial run for the Ashes tour. A tour meant to put the English cricketers through their paces, fine tune their form and iron out the wrinkles.

One-person keen to do all that is Michael Vaughan. Though he has not done much during South Africa’s tour and nothing much since, Vaughan is relying on the selectors to go by his past record for a place in the squad. Luckily, for him England’s coach Moores and Pietersen have all been making encouraging noises regarding his return.

Ian Bells rather indifferent form and the reluctance of the English management to give Owais Shah another opportunity may also work in his favour. Above all this Vaughan’s purple patch against the Australian’s may well see him reinstated.

The very fact that Vaughan features as a probable for the West Indies tour is indication that England’s fixation over Michael Vaughan continues unabated.

UPDATE: VAUGHAN MISSES OUT.

England plays 3 Tests, 5 one-dayers and 1 Twenty20 match during the West Indies part of the tour.

Why should India be disappointed?

Sri Lanka CricketImage via WikipediaIndia unhappy with Sri Lanka's cricket tour to Pakistan: Reports

This is ‘motivated’ reporting:

Independent Sunday Times quoting SLC sources said that the decision by the Ranatunga administration to undertake the tour "had irked the Indian authorities" and the matter had been discussed "at the highest levels in Colombo".

"These sources said that SLC also received clear signals that Indian authorities were unhappy with the move to tour Pakistan when they were having political problems with that country. They said they treated the Sri Lankan move as a snub on the Indians mainly as a fallout from the Indian Premier League (IPL) issue," the daily said.

The report said that the Sri Lankan sports authorities were forced to go to the foreign ministry to get clearance for the national team's tour to Pakistan next month "following a nose-dive in Indo-Pak relations in recent weeks".

There is no earthly reason for India to object to the Sri Lankan cricket team touring Pakistan. Granted that the BCCI and Ranatunga who held the Chairman of the SLC’s interim committee until recently failed to see eye to eye on various issues, by no stretch of imagination can it be portrayed as the reason. It is also to be noted that Ranatunga and his committee has been disbanded and the Sri Lanka’s sports minister decided to tour Pakistan after getting the Sri Lankan President’s approval.

Undeniably, the very reason that the President’s approval was sought indicates that the tour was a political time bomb. However, it is unlikely the President of Sri Lanka would take any decision that could mar Sri Lanka’s relationship with India.

This attempt to portray India and its cricket board BCCI as over bearing entities should be roundly condemned.

Aussies let slip the advantage.

Australia v South Africa Day 3, 2nd Test

If yesterday, one was wondering whether South Africa could salvage a draw, today one is back to wondering who will be the winner. For after having the South Africans down on their knees the Australian’s let slip the advantage.

The third day’s play can be described as a day when everything went wrong for the Australians. The day started with the dismaying news of Brett Lee’s non-participation due to a sore foot.

From then on, to put it mildly, it was the horrors.  They dropped catches, gave away a 5 run over throw and to add insult to injury Haddin let a ball through his legs only to see it hit the helmet placed behind him.

In the meanwhile a180 run record partnership between the diminutive Duminy and Steyn not only helped overhaul the Australian total but also gave South Africa a decent lead of 65 runs.

Now the Test is wide open. The result surely hinges on how well the Australians bat and bowl.

Can South Africa salvage a draw?

Australia v South Africa. 2nd Test, 2nd Day

Replying to Australia's first innings score of 394, South Africa are 198/ 7 on day two. With 3 days play still remaining and 196 runs lead to be overcome, South Africa is certainly heading for defeat.

If the 3rd play follows the same pattern as the 2nd day’s, then undoubtedly Australia will skittle out South Africa before lunch. It will leave the South African’s vulnerable on two fronts. One they will obviously give Australia a handsome lead and two leave the Australians with enough time to run up a huge second innings score. This will provide the Australians sufficient opportunity to put the match out of their grasp.

However, considering the frailties of the present Australian team, one cannot rule out the S.Africans. Coming as they are into the 2nd Test match on the back of a record run chase, they are certainly high on self-belief. They also know that they can easily turn around this match by demolishing the Australian 2nd innings.

All the same, the question is can the South Africans salvage a draw.

Sri Lanka's tour of Pakistan is officially on.

Sri Lanka has finally confirmed the month-long tour of Lankan cricket team set to begin on January 20.

Though Sri Lanka unhesitatingly stepped in to the breech created by India’s cancellation of its tour to Pakistan, the fate of the tour was in doubt when the interim cricket committee led by former Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga was unceremoniously dissolved.

The Sports Minister further added to the confusion when he indicated that  as they did not intend to upset the Indian Government, he CSL would have to examine the tour . Finally, despite these confusions the Sri Lankan President in consultation with the foreign minister has given the ‘go ahead’ for the tour.

The decision to tour clearly indicates to the world that the Indian government, nee the BCCI does not control cricket in the Indian sub-continent and its high time the former cricketers and administrators to stop carping about the power of the BCCI.

Referral System raises more questions

Cricket Referral expectations Image by Tom Leuntjens

The referral system tried out in the series between New Zealand and West Indies has created its own share of controversies. Similar to the India-Sri Lanka series where it was experimented earlier, the players who one expected to welcome this innovation seem to have the most complaints against it.

The similarity between the two series did not end there. If in the India –Sri Lanka series the Sri Lankan team led by Mahela Jayawardene were accused of asking innumerable questions to the umpire, here the New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori said, one unsuccessful challenge is the right number; three allows teams to try and milk a 50-50 call. The implication being that the West Indian team was banking on the off-field umpire to compound the error.

The West Indies coach has also added his two cents by saying that the referral system is not perfect yet and with three referrals, there is a feeling players are challenging for the sake of it. He also added that three referrals are too many; he believes one is not enough, so he would favour two referrals.

What ever be its perceived inconsistencies, the referral system is undoubtedly a welcome addition to the game of cricket and as prophesied by Dave Richardson, it adds to the drama.

From the comments of the players at the end of both the India-Sri Lanka and the New Zealand-West Indies series, it is clear that the players have inflated expectations about it. The ICC should ensure that the players are educated about the limitations of the referral system.

Mercifully, the BCCI is hard at work trying to conjure up a triangular ODI series.

Cheers to the BCCI.

The peculiar situation of Pakistan's IPL players

Heightened tensions between India and Pakistan have made the Pakistani players undesirable for most IPL franchisees.

With the likelihood of getting clearance for these players to play in India remote, the franchisees have requested them to sign consent forms to place them for sale (trading). This is where their plight becomes ridiculous. No franchisee will be interested to buy them, as they too will find it difficult to get the necessary clearance.

So for the Pakistani players it is a case of neither here nor there.

Shoaib Malik, Shoaib Akhtar, Misbah-ul-Haq, Umar Gul, Mohammad Asif, Kamran Akmal, and Sohail Tanvir are some of the players who have IPL contracts.

The ICL embargo

Cricket ICL Christmas Reports say ICC’s three top officials- David Morgan, Sharad Pawar and Haroon Lorgat met Subhash Chandra, the owner of the ICL at New Delhi.
As reported earlier, ICL’s application to the ICC demanding recognition has been gathering dust primarily due to the BCCI. This meeting however implies all the parties concerned including the obdurate BCCI have realized the importance of resolving this pesky issue at the earliest.
Consequently, this cloak and dagger meeting gains significance as it may provide relief to the cricketers; the various support staff and the administrators who now stand ostracized for associating themselves with this rebel league.
Cricinfo, a leading website, speculates that the ICL may be accommodated as an authorised tournament albeit as a tournament of exhibition matches. This will let those who want to play in ICL continue playing without the fear of being banned.
However the Subhash Chandra owned Zee news, reports that the, “ICC was contemplating an ICL window in its calendar. ICC board is scheduled to meet on January 31st next year (2009) where the resolution in this regard would be drafted”.
Apparently, the parties concerned are still imparting their own spin to the issue. Let us hope the New Year ends this vexatious issue.

Abdul Qadir moots new-fangled ideas

Cricket selectors jokers muppets Pakistan cricket’s chief selector Abdul Qadir wants Test, ODI-type trial matches clip_image002clip_image001clip_image002[1]to select the national team for the series against Sri Lanka starting in January.

Better men have failed to overcome the regional bias and the partisanship of those involved in the selection process. Only time will tell whether Qadir can overcome the regional and the personal bias of others involved in the selection process and succeed in naming the ideal squad.
He has also proposed the introduction of separate Captains and teams for the longer and shorter format of the game. Though this is not revolutionary, it is an idea that is contrary to the present trend. Earlier other cricket playing nations like India, Australia and England, to name a few, had different captains for each format but they have now reverted to the tried and tested formula of one player captaining the team in all the formats.
This is in part due to rise of players like Dhoni, Pietersen, Smith and Ponting who excel in all the formats of the game. However, when it comes to Pakistan this may not work as Shoaib Malik is deemed a weak Test Captain and a better ODI player and hence a stronger ODI captain. It could also help the rein in the rank self-centeredness of some of the seniors who miss no opportunity to trip current captain.

IPL: Turmoil at the Bangalore Royal Challengers

Rumors surfaced yesterday, the day when IPL opened its trading window for the transfer of players that Vijay Mallya the owner of the Bangalore Royal Challengers franchisee was putting up his whole team for sale. This in turn sparked off the speculation that Vijay Mallya was putting his franchisee for sale.

Mallya put these speculations to rest by issuing a swift clarification “I wish to clarify that the Bangalore Royal Challengers are not up for sale and neither do we seek to transfer a majority of our current players”.

He added that there was a possibility of swapping players to achieve a better balance of the team.

Now this has sparked of another round of speculation about who are these players. Intriguingly the speculation seems to surround only the foreign players. BRC has Dale Steyn, Mark Boucher, Ross Taylor, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Misbah-ul Haq, Jacques Kallis and Nathan Bracken.

Kallis and Bracken along with one other player are said to be the players up for sale. Selling Kallis is a sound decision as he not only performed poorly during the last edition but in the just concluded domestic Twenty20 tournament in South Africa he was found wanting.

However, there is no percentage in selling Bracken. Bracken has put in some stirring performances in the Australian league and regarded as one of the leading ODI bowler’s in the world. He could also come in handy if the proposal to play a part of the tournament in England comes through.

In all probability it could be Chanderpaul due to his unavailability and the yet to be unnamed player could be Misbah, a fall out of the recent Mumbai terror attacks.

However observers believe that Mallya and the Bangalore Royal Challengers should focus on getting rid of deadweights like Kumble, Joshi etc., (Dravid escapes the ignominy by virtue of being the icon player). They have done nothing in the past and are unlikely to do so in the future.

Do you agree that Mallya should focus on getting rid of Kumble and the like?

Mohali Test: This match is going nowhere.

5th Day 2nd Test match India v England 2008

The fall of Pietersen and Flintoff at the fag end of the third day’s play killed almost all chances of result. If there was some possibility left, it died along with Sehwag’s run out.

From now on, this match holds only an academic interest. Maybe one can speculate how soon or when Dhoni will declare the innings close.

However, it is inconceivable that Dhoni sitting pretty on a 1-0 lead will make a sporting declaration and his declaration is going to provide the necessary twist in the tale.

In all probability, this is going to be one of the notorious Mohali draws. Given the conditions, it is surprising that test matches at Mohali inevitably end in a draw.

At the fag end of the day or at the close of the match I am expecting Dravid to announce his retirement.

Do you think Dravid will announce his retirement?

Test Match Cricket: Does it have the buzz back?

Cricket News Online Live Buzz Just when everyone was bemoaning the lack of interest, Test match cricket grabbed everyone’s attention last week.

Against a normal course of lop sided results, a Test match involving India and England culminated in one of the biggest Test cricket run chases last week. Similarly, South Africa’s successful run chase on Sunday, again another one of the biggest Test cricket run chases, has only shown what Test matches can dish out.

Admittedly, the Chidambaram was for most parts barren. On the other hand, the WACA was full. Despite the suspect crowds at MAC, these gripping encounters have got the buzz back to Test cricket. Surely, the conversation around the water-coolers will be about the South Africa’s incredible win and the possible dethroning of Australia from its perch.

Now the question is does these two Test matches indicate the revival of Test match cricket or is it Test match crickets dying gasp?

What will Dhoni do?

Cricket News Online Live Question The third day's play began and ended in an identical manner i.e., in a flurry of wickets.

If the morning session was India’s, England owned the middle session. However, the removal of Pietersen and Flintoff in the final overs of the third day’s play has brought the match in control of India again.

From the looks of it, India may end up with a lead of 100 runs. From then on, the fate of the match depends on how quickly India extends the lead. Going by the happenings in the last Test match and the one that ended in Australia yesterday, no total appears safe.

It will be interesting to see how the young and vibrant Dhoni uses the opportunities at the end of today’s play. Will he play safe, protect his series lead and or will he be venturesome, and force a result?

The significance of Dravid’s 26th Test Century

Cricket News Online Live Rahul Dravid Undoubtedly, Rahul Dravid’s 26th Test 100 is a significant one not only because of its impact on the 2nd Test match between India and England at Mohali, but also because of its impact on how people perceive his career.

Considering the fact that this was his first after a prolonged 20 innings drought, this is indeed a significant ton for the beleaguered batsmen. His 348-ball knock justified the selectors and the Indian team management’s faith in him. With this knock of 136 runs, he enthused the flagging spirits of his fans.

Dravid himself was quick to admit his relief “It’s a quite significant knock, considering the form I was in coming into the match. Its one of the most significant hundreds I scored and I now just hope we go on to win this match."

However, Rahul will admit that this ton in no way signifies that he has recaptured his form. It showed that Rahul Dravid has not lost his tenacity and his desire to perform for his country. It showed that he could still fight toe to toe and look the opposition   unblinkingly in their eyes. It showed why Rahul Dravid goes by the nickname ‘The Wall’.

Beyond all this, it showed that Dravid could now retire with his head held high.

India v England, 3rd Day, 2nd Test, Mohali

Despite a 314 run partnership between Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid, India were 453 all out at the end of the truncated second day, an end inconceivable as they were 302 -1 at lunch.

Post lunch they lost the well set Gambhir and Dravid to inexplicable shots. Laxman and Tendulkar soon followed and India lost 4 wickets for just 19 runs. The situation would have been grave had Cook latched on to a dolly from Yuvraj. In a way, the rest of the runs were hard work, so they could well be the margin of victory.

As the match stands, despite dawdling, India holds the upper hand. Harbhajan has to bowl well to seal a victory. However, bad light and the weather could dictate the result.

The ICC Equation

Now that the Government of India has disallowed the Indian cricket team’s tour of Pakistan, the relationship between the India and the Pakistan Cricket board will surely come under stress.

Obviously, the BCCI and the PCB considering the financial incentives would have liked to go ahead with the tour. However, the matter was out of their hands once the Mumbai Terror attacks caused a rupture in the relationship between the two nations. The Indian government with parliamentary elections around the corner had no wish to act oblivious of the public sentiment. As cricket holds such a hold over the psyche of the two nations, the GOI decided to act firmly. (Now cricket lovers may argue that they should show the firmness elsewhere.)

Leaving the merits and demerits of the GOI’s decision aside, it is germane to wonder what it will do to the relationship between the two cricketing nations. As the decision is too raw, it is guaranteed to generate venomous outpourings from Pakistan. Already personalities like Rashid Latif has made demands calculated to sour the relationship between PCB and the BCCI further. The politicians and the media are going to join in to aggravate the situation sooner then later.

Funnily enough both the PCB and the BCCI appear reconciled to this decision and left to themselves they would quietly waited for the situation between the two countries to resolve before taking any drastic decision. As said earlier the situation has gone out of their hands.

To add to the turmoil, Sri Lanka Cricket Board a known BCCI baiter suspected of conspiring with the ECB has swiftly stepped into the breach. Their willingness to tour when other nations had refused is going to make them close to the PCB. Their intimacy surely would have caused discomfort to the BCCI if not for the fact that the ECB who would have relished BCCI’s discomfort is itself on shaky grounds over Stanford and their own breed of EPL.

This brings us to the interesting conundrum of who is going to support whom in the ICC. Until now, PCB has been a firm supporter of the BCCI and CSL rumored to support ECB. From news reports, it appears CSA and CA the weather cocks of the ICC has quietly backed BCCI. They may not change their colours soon unless the ECB shows enough gumption to take on the BCCI again. Considering the present bonhomie between the ECB and the BCCI, it looks unlikely that the ECB will launch an attack head-on. However, with its vote bank suspect, the BCCI’s days of bulldozing the opposition may be over. It has to learn to be more openly accommodative and less self-centered.

Surely, this change in the power equation within the ICC is good for the development of cricket and hence welcome.

2nd Test Day 2, Mohali, India –England, 2008

India squanders away the toss advantage.
As I predicted India failed to score even 200 runs at close of play on the 1st day of the 2nd Test between India and England at Mohali.
Granted bad light robbed nearly 120 minutes of play. Yet to score only 179 in 72 over's averaging just over 2 runs per over is lamentable. By neither setting the pace nor securing the game, India has squandered away the advantage of winning the toss and batting first.
Look at it this way, 179 is by no means a comfortable total because; the pitch is going to provide some movement at the start of the day 2. A couple early wickets can leave India gasping and mounting a rear guard action. This uncertainty is needless and if the batsmen had attempted to force the pace, things would have looked rosier.
Gambhir by scoring his 3rd -century in as many matches has underlined how far he has evolved. He is currently India’s most dependable batsman. Dravid made an unconvincing 65. Contrary to what is said in the media, Dravid is nowhere near his pomp and struggled for 205 balls to score his 65. Someone should put his and our misery to an end.
By the look of it if the Indian batsmen fail to take the English bowling by the scruff of its neck, it is going to be one boring Test match.

Pakistan Tour cancellation – It is the correct decision

The Indian cricket team’s tour of Pakistan has generated a good healthy discussion on this blog. If yesterday I assumed that, the majority was for a delayed tour today our readers have proved that the naysayers are in equal number.

Philip9876 another of regular readers has left a stinging retort at my feeble attempt to differentiate between sporting and political relations with Pakistan.

Here is his retort in full; the Ott he refers to is none other than me.

Ott, its easy to say that we should decouple politics and sports. But just going thru the sports minister's quote. "One team comes and mows down 190 people and they want another team to go there and play as if nothing happened?"

I dont even want to have any sort of communication with the country of Pakistan and her people. By going to Pak, the PCB would have made $20million. PCB is headed by Miandad, who in turn is a close relative of Dawood. Dawood is known to bet on cricket matches. With a relative of one of the world's dreaded criminal related to the PCB so closely, how do we trust the PCB any more? What's a guarantee that Miandad/Dawood nexus wont fix the matches or profit in private from the matches?

The money earned by betting on the matches will be used by Dawood to further his drug trade and to help ISI foment terror in India and the region.

Why give them a chance? I heard that PCB is in deep trouble and that by India pulling out, its on the verge of collapse. That's what i always wanted. To let Pakistan know that there is cost to escalating tensions and to pursue its wellknown policy of bleeding India with a thousand cuts. The only weapon that India has is economics. WE should use it to strangle Pak as much as possible so that the next time they even think of fomenting terror, they should pee in their pants.

As for all the people who say that both politics and sports should be apart, i would like to hear their comments after the next team from Pakistan comes and mows down his/her family.

We should have no contacts with Pak. Period. There are many more civilised countries in the world to play cricket with.

Though I do not necessarily agree with all he has said, I believe some of his points are irrefutable.

What do you think?

DAY 1 2nd Test – Mohali – INDIA ENGLAND 2008

Shewag goes early – India crawls to lunch
Continuing a sub-continental tradition that the team that wins the toss bats first, India won the toss and unhesitatingly chose to bat first. However, the match got to a delayed start due to bad light.

The start was ominous for India, they lost Sehwag early to Broad who replaced a rather a flat Harmison in the English squad. You can say that Sehwag’s dismissal put everything in perspective. India has made a painstaking 51 in 21 over’s to lunch.

Despite hints to the contrary, Dravid who was expected to come lower down the order walked in at his usual place in the batting order and his labored batting had much to do with the slow run rate.

A look at the English bowling analysis (Up to Lunch) reveals how tough the going has been made out to be. From here on even a 200 at the end of the day looks well neigh impossible.

James Anderson    7 0 16 0 (1nb)

Stuart Broad          7 3 17 1

Andrew Flintoff      5 1 7 0 (1nb)

Monty Panesar      1 0 8 0

Graeme Swann      1 1 0 0

What would you call this – consolidation or an abject crawl?
Image via Wikipedia

The Indians are overwhelming favorites

The conditions for the second Test is a lot different from Chennai. The surface will definitely help the seamers early in the Test. However, India with Zaheer and Ishanth in prime form appear more equipped to take advantage of the conditions than the demoralized Harmison and Anderson.

The come from behind victory surely makes India the favourites to win this one. If they win the Mohali Test, India then becomes second in the ICC Test ranking. This should be motivation enough for them to strive for a 2-0 whitewash.

Despite so many positives, the Dravid problem is a recurring headache. With the selectors reposing faith in him, Dhoni has to select him in the eleven. According to a news report, the Indian team think tank is contemplating bringing up VVS Laxman and pushing Dravid down the order. However one ceases to understand the need for such a move, why upset a set batting order to accommodate him.

India should tour Pakistan

Yesterday, I had written a longwinded post on why India should abort its tour of Pakistan. As I had expected, it garnered quiet a few intelligent responses. (Fortunately, there has been no bigoted responses as yet.:))

Going by those responses it is easy to conclude that the majority want the tour to go on albeit with one caveat i.e., after a delay.

Scorpicity one of our regulars has taken the pains to give a detailed justification on why the tour should go on. As a mark of respect for his opinion and the amount of time he spent in the detailed response, I reproduce his comment here as it is worthy of further examination.

Read on:

Am one of those who says India should not cut ties playing with Pakistan.

Cutting sporting ties is not going to help stop terrorism nor stop the CIA/Mossad controlled pets like the ISI from doing its nefarious deeds. It has not changed anything in the past. So why such an eye-wash that will have no impact whatsoever.

The impact this will have is to remove contacts and grow good old half-baked info backed animosity of Indian/Pakistani fans, players with the general people in Pakistan thus giving a good breeding environment for the evil folks in their establishment to spread their lies.

Let's consider this, ever since the earlier Pakistan tour, the IPL/ICL, a bit of bollywood crap, the mindset of Indian and Pakistani people have considerably changed towards each other. Both in many ways start to realize that either side are not blood suckers that are out to wipe each other out.

However, even this doesn't change anything for the pets in the establishment except that it would be difficult for these forces to sell more garbage about India in Pakistan. That is a small but distinct and much needed advantage which is required to foster peace. Same likewise.

However I also understand that it is impossible to neglect political spills over into cricket, as in this case, a very strong one.

So should India tour Pakistan? Yes, but not in January. We should consider the security aspect in relation to Otts point on the sensitivities of say a possible mishap and hence alternative venues may make sense for a while even though it is totally farcical for the context for Ind-PAK cricket.

  1. To start with, let the investigation get over completely and all facts, reports about the same be publicly disclosed. I am going to emphasize this... we as the people of India has to demand that the report be available in public domain in entirety.
  2. Critically examine that report to ensure there are no goof-ups like in the earlier cases and strengthen the case a.k.a ensure all truths are covered in the report.
  3. Take a definitive call after that on all aspects, both politically and or cricket, whatever. Until then, no need for knee-jerk reactions but things can be put on a simmer.

What do you believe now, should the tour go on?

Odds favour Australia

Australia-South Africa Series 2008

The bookmakers consider Australia as favourites at 1.80 to win the series whereas South Africa is listed at 3.45.

However, a true blue punter knows that he can make a large profit by betting on South Africa, as they are a truly balanced side. In addition, Australia though a strong side has been seriously tested in India and found wanting.

Whom do you favour?

Hayden's Halcyon days are behind him.

Cricket News Online Live Hayden Image from LiveNews.com

Mathew Hayden's failure in Perth yesterday, where he made 12 before falling to Makhaya Ntini has everyone speculating about his immediate future. Although the Boxing Day Test specialist is a certainty for the second Test against South Australia, rumours fuelled by a Justin Langer interview yesterday, has cast doubts over his inclusion for the Ashes series.

As everyone is aware, Hayden is going through a miserable run of form. It has been nearly a year since his last test hundred against India and in addition, his return from an Achilles heel injury has seen him averaging a low 22. This has made his detractors wonder whether his trademark aggression (he had 3 boundaries in his innings of 12) is a result of desperation.

Like all great batsmen he may just make a fool of his detractors by scoring huge hundreds again, however there is no denying the fact that his repeated failures and the availability of talented players like Shaun Marsh is making his future appear increasingly murkier.

Should India tour Pakistan?

Union Sports Minister M.S. Gill on Friday said the country’s team, under the prevailing circumstances, should not tour Pakistan. Though he pointed out that the final decision on the subject rested with the government his statement could well be a trial balloon in order to judge the public sentiments over such a decision.
However, his justification seems a well thought out one and could well sway the fence sitters to decide against the tour.
“People from their soil were indulging in mass murder in India. I have played cricket. I know the spirit of cricket. Cricket is not commerce. Is it possible for one team to arrive in Mumbai and indulge in mass murder and have another team go and play cricket in the winter afternoon sun at Lahore immediately after?
Personally, I am ambivalent over this issue. On one hand, I believe that sports and politics should remain apart. Similarly, I believe Jingoism has no place in sport. Yet this particular issue is different in the sense that it is time for India to show to the Pakistani leaders and the elements running the terror organizations that India is taking these repeated incursions seriously. As cricket tours have not once but twice been the backbone to creating normalcy between the two countries it is important enough to be used as a tool to shows India’s displeasure.
On the other hand, I believe, cricket tours has gone a long way in establishing that Indians are human and not ogres as they the Pakistani public feared. It has done the same to change how the Indians observed a Pakistani. Hence, I believe that by refusing to tour will serve to further heighten misconceptions and the hate campaign ratcheted up by some motivated elements inside Pakistan will gain currency among the Pakistani public.
Nevertheless, beyond these two intellectual fears, I am opposed to the Indian cricket team touring Pakistan because I fear for the physical well-being of the Indian team. It is a well-established fact that the criminal elements in the Pakistan intelligence (ISI) have a huge say in the matters regarding the military and the police. If the Indian team is to tour Pakistan, they will, on the assurances and the security provide by them. When the very same security connived and leaked like a sieve to let in assassins (Benazir Bhutto assassination) what is to stop them doing the same to the Indian cricket team? In fact, it does not have to go that far: a cracker burst near the Indian cricket team is enough to set off a war and bring international sanctions against Pakistan. It will mean that the ordinary Pakistani eking a day-to-day living will suffer prodigiously.
For that reason, for the sake of sanity, for the sake of peace, for the sake of the Pakistani people, for the sake of the Indian people and undoubtedly for cricket, I say, “abort this tour”.
What do you think should India tour Pakistan?

Chennai Test - A win to cherish

CRICKET NEWS ONLINE LIVE Image from AccessVegas.com

To those of you interested in hearing my take on this improbable victory, please click here.

BTW, if you are wondering at the relevance of the photo, here goes: the woman is ‘exhibiting unfettered’ glee.:)

Day 5, Ist Test, India –England, Chepauk

Lunch: India 174 runs short of a record-breaking win.

Chasing a target of 387 runs to win the first Test, India were 213 at the loss of 3 wickets at lunch on the final day of the Chennai Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

As expected, Dravid lost his wicket hanging out his bat to a Flintoff delivery only to nick it to Prior. It is time for the selectors to do the job on him.

Though Dravid left early, it was not anxiety provoking as Gambhir’s wicket. He too was guilty of throwing his wicket away by playing a tame shot. If he had continued, it would have meant another option for Dhoni to accelerate the innings after lunch.

Thankfully, the old guard Tendulkar and Laxman are still there. Laxman is stroking beautifully and have already giving the Indian fans visions of a regal victory.

India need a further174 runs in the two remaining sessions, with 7 wickets in hand, will there be any further drama or is it going to be a straight forward clinical victory
Sehwag evens the odds.

Sehwag's 83 off 68 balls gave India a more than a realistic chance to chase 387-run target set by England. Now India need 250 runs in 90 over’s a task that is possible in the age of Twenty20’s.

His blitzkrieg has put the pressure back on England. They would never have dreamt that when they set the target it would have shrunk to 256 at the end of day 4. Now all India needs is one other big innings preferably at a fast clip, then the deed will be done effortlessly by the end of the day.

Yet, a true Indian cricket team fan will wake up tomorrow wondering whether they can get the 256 runs of 90 over’s.

Day 4,1st Test, India England Chepauk

The Indians wake up
The Indians woke up from the Mumbai terror attack induced stupor. After letting England take the upper hand for almost 31/2 days, the Indian bowlers particularly Zaheer and Ishanth came to the fore. They ripped apart the pretenders in the English middle order and in the process gladdened their fans heart.

If it was Zaheer and Ishath who nudged a slumbering India, then it was Sehwag, who on a lazy Sunday afternoon shook the country awake. In just 23 over’s, Sehwag put up a 117 runs partnership with Gambhir, slamming 11 fours and 4 sixes.

His innings altered the complexion of the match. Now India holds all the cards needing another 256 runs with 9 wickets remaining. If there is going to be a full days play tomorrow, this match is going to have a stirring climax.

The English batsmen prove their resilience

Leading by 247 runs with seven wickets still in hand, the match is firmly in England’s grasp. They clearly cannot lose and this will embolden them to go for quick runs after playing out the morning session securely.

Dhoni will certainly instruct Zaheer and Ishanth to bowl wide of the off stump, not only to deny runs but also to frustrate the English batsmen. The ploy is to frustrate them so much that post lunch when the Indian pace combo pitch it up the run starved batsmen will go for the hits only to succumb to the reverse swing. Even if the ploy works and England batsmen collapse in a heap after lunch, India will still face the uphill task of chasing a record-breaking total.

As usual, the press and the blogs have been proclaiming the end of Dhoni’s (captaincy) honeymoon. Though he and his team looked a trifle flat after tea, a result of not getting wickets after lunch, there appears nothing palpably wrong; it is just that the over the last three days, the English batsmen have proved their resilience.

Coming to the day’s play the first objective is to terminate the 129-run stand between Strauss and Collingwood. If India lets them burgeon beyond the first half-hour, they have the mulishness to dampen both the Indian team and their fans spirit.

Day 3,1st Test, India England Chepauk

6.30 A.M.

Even their most optimistic fan must be feeling pessimistic about India’s chances. The sorry state of the innings is partly due to Sehwag’s failure. For the last year or so, it has been Sehwag, who not only provides an impetus to the Indian innings but also bulk of the runs. Our recent success has been fashioned around his belligerence.

It is also time to drop Dravid. Undoubtedly, he has been our mainstay in the past and served Indian cricket well. Nevertheless, the time for being sentimental or being grateful for his contribution is past.

Similarly, it is time to jettison ‘Project Yuvraj’. It is evident that test cricket is beyond the scope of his ‘airy fairy’ technique. Once again, he has demonstrated his inability to adapt to the longer format.

Coming to today’s game, the tail enders have to give sufficient opportunities for Dhoni to whittle away the lead. Evidently, India has no hope of saving this test match. Their only hope is to reduce the chase to a manageable level. For that to happen, the Indian bowling has to come to the fore.

2nd DAY 1st Test India-England Chepauk

5.00 P.M.

Graeme Swann claimed two wickets in his first over in Test cricket but keen observers will have noticed that his second wicket was that of the sitting duck Dravid. Dravid’s form is such that any ball pitched on or just outside the off stump and short of good length will find him prodding at the ball from the creases. The result either is a snick or bowled which looks spectacular on television. The difference was this time he was out lbw.

However, this was said not belittle Swann’s effort; it was indeed a great first over for the debutant Swann. What can one say about the next two wickets? It was an unexpected gift – a bumper one for England. Both Tendulkar and Laxman are guilty of squandering away their good start and handing the advantage over to England.

Surprisingly Yuvraj, who came in next, lasted 41 balls and perished to an airy wave at a ball seaming away from outside the off stump. To no ones surprise, Ravi Shastri was urging him to tighten up his technique if he is serious about continuing to play test cricket. One is amazed at the number of chances Yuvraj gets and the number of times he has proved to be bad test cricketer purely on account of his loose technique.

Now Dhoni is alone to fight the good fight with the tail enders.

The England bowlers have combined beautifully and consolidated on the good work done by the batsman. Unless Dhoni or some else hits a purple patch, India is sure to gift England a substantial lead. India will have to do the running from now on.

1.00P.M.

Mishra landed a body blow to England’s ambition of scoring 400 by removing their star all-rounder Andrew Flintoff in the third over of the day. He then followed it up removing the obdurate Anderson who had by then put on 42 runs with Prior.

Then Harbhajan stepped up and dismissed Graeme Swann with a ball that bounced and turned. Harmison hung on while Prior landed some lusty blows and inched the score past 300. A beauty from Yuvraj, who to Bowden’s amusement did not know that he had Harmison out, broke their partnership.

Finally, Ishanth Sharma trapped Panesar leg-before and England was all out for 316.

The Indian spinners have shown the way, now it is up to the English spinners to add competitiveness to this Test match.

6.00 A.M.

Have England done enough after winning the toss was the question on everyone’s mind at the close of the 1st days play. From the Indian team’s point of view England have failed to capitalise on their luck with the toss.

Not only have their run rate been anaemic they have lost their top five batsmen. Though Strauss claims that a score of 400 is good in India, it is doubtful whether that score will give them a substantial lead at the end of the Indian first innings.

If they have to browbeat the Indians, England has to score over 500 runs. Considering the state of their innings that appears unlikely.

Day 1, 1 st Test, India –England Chepauk

5.00 P.M.

Well, Pietersen won the toss and elected to bat first on the opening day at Chidambaram Stadium.

As expected, India included Yuvraj and Gambhir joined Sehwag as his opening partner after serving out his one-test ban for trying to crack Watson's ribs with his elbows.

England as announced yesterday blooded Swann and went into this match with a five-bowler attack. Obviously, they are confident that their bowlers will be hard put to make an impression on the Indian batsmen and hence needed done more bowler to bowl out the over’s.

However, at 164 for 1 at tea it looked like it were the Indians who needed a 5 man bowling attack.

Fortunately, Zaheer's double strike and Billy Bowden's trigger happiness-restored parity. The wicket of Strauss at the tail end of the day has tilted the balance in India's favour.

At 229 for 5 India has an upper hand. The course of the match depends on how long the Indian bowlers let Flintoff play.

6.00 A.M.

The weather, though a suspect, is unlikely to delay the start of the first day. The pitch is bound to be wet and even if the sun blazes, it is going to help the fast bowlers during the first session. This could tempt the team winning the toss to insert the opposition and hope to wreak damage. However, they will have to inflict heavy damage for it to work.

Coming to the Indian team, based on his one-day hot streak Yuvraj’s return seems a formality. For no fault of his, Badrinath remains the eternal bridesmaid and this may well be the story of his life.

The Chepauk crowd is sure to give the English team a standing ovation when they first step into the ground. That could well be the moment of the day.

The team:

Mahendra Singh Dhoni , Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma.

Can Kevin Pietersen name his own price?

Cricket News Online Live Image by bajolagua.es

It has been suggested that England’s decision to continue their tour in India in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks will surely up their bidding price when the Indian Premier League transfer window opens next week.

However, going by the sentiments expressed by the CEO of the Deccan Chargers it appears that IPL franchisees are still awaiting the final word from the ECB on their availability.

"It [England's decision] does not change our plans at all," said Tim Wright, chief executive of the Deccan Chargers. "We are either interested in a player or not irrespective of whether they play two Test matches in December. We have taken a view on the people we want. Their price will be more to do with availability than playing in these two Test matches."

So, Kevin Pietersen has to wait for some more time to name his price.
