The Dhoni disagreement

According to the television channels, Dhoni had a disagreement with the selectors during the meeting to pick the team for the fourth and fifth matches of the ODI series against England.

The disagreement rose over the decision to drop RP Singh and include Irfan Pathan in his place and a miffed Dhoni had offered to relinquish the captaincy. The BCCI President Shashank Manohar reportedly had to intervene to settle the issue amicably.

Both Dhoni and the BCCI have promptly refuted this report. However, this alleged disagreement brings forth an issue that has been discussed threadbare i.e., should the Captain have a say in the team selection.

This blogger is of the opinion that letting a captain choose his men breeds nepotism and hence a captain should have no say in determining his team’s composition.

What do you think, should the captain have a say in the team selection?

Banish both the captain and the coach from the selection process. Captain will incur the wrath of the players unnecessarily and the coach has no business to deal with the selection.

It is the captain who has to lead the team on the field and it is the captain who has to front up to the media after the game.

If the captain does not have confidence in the team he is leading, it is detrimental to the team.

So yes, the captain has to have a say in team selection.

R,

Exactly, both the captain and the coach should have no say in the team selection.

Homer,

My objection is it will give rise to captain playing favorites.

A president/PM has a say in his cabinet ministers as otherwise success will be limited. I think as bcci rules the captain does not have voting power, so can only give his opinion and I don't see the harm in that - after all selectors have their own favorites as well.

RS,

I am struck dumb by your well reasoned argument and can make only a feeble attempt at countering it.

We already have a power center i.e., the BCCI at least there are some political give and take.

Whereas a captain has nothing to fear, if given the power to select, definitely he will play favorites.

Take RP, what has he done in the recent past to justify Dhoni's faith?

Similarly, remember Saba Karim and Deep Dasgupta?

Completely... In every other profession around the world, it is the man in charge who recruits his troops. Those he has confidence in.. it is not the board of directors who choose the CEO's team...

As homer said - it is the captain who is in charge on the field and he needs HIS men there not those handed to him by a bunch of jokers.

Q,

Agree with you that a Captain should have the power to select.

But in this case it is different. He was given a choice of 15 from which to select 11.

I think it is a fair barter.

Dhoni or any other captain can rise a stink if he is forced to put up a 11 he has not selected.

ottayan: I agree RP would perhaps benefit from some Ranji matches. I am not sure if Irfan is the right choice. So much emphasis was placed on his batting, that his bowling has suffered. He come across as another part-timer rather than a strike bowler.

But besides that, I still feel if 5 or how many ever selectors vote, there is no harm a good debate and hearing the opinion of the coach/captain. If he threatened to quit so soon on not getting his way, Dhoni was wrong. But the leak was perhaps "more" wrong. When the team is doing well, you wonder the motivation for the leak?

The captain must have a say in the selection.

After all the buck stops with him and hence he is more likely to select the best possible side.

Regarding the captain playing favourite, the selectors too have done that on innumerable occasions.

Also in the Indian set up, invariably I would trust the captain to have more integrity than the selectors.

RS,

I understand that Dhoni did not say so. He reportedly said that they the selectors should also listen to him as he is the captain. ( My knowledge of Hindi is at best rudimentary.)

I agree there no purpose was served by leaking the disagreement other than to fix Dhoni.

RGB,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.I agree among the lot the Captain displays more integrity as it is his head on the line.

The captain should not have any say... you play with the team you are given and leave it to the selectors.

Indian cricket had once already this problem of nepotism... why reinvent all over.

Scorpi,

It is another power game.
