Kumble’s awe inspiring world records

“As I give thought to the matter, I find four causes for the apparent misery of old age: first, it withdraws us from active accomplishments; second, it renders the body less powerful; third, it deprives us of almost all forms of enjoyment; fourth, it stands not far from death.” - Cicero

By conceding 129 runs without taking a wicket in the first innings at Bengaluru, Anil Kumble is now a holder of an astonishing and awe inspiring three world records.

  1. This was the 56th time Kumble conceded 100 or more runs in a Test innings - a new world record. He was earlier at level with Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan with 55 such instances.
  2. Kumble is the only bowler in Test cricket to concede 100 runs or more in an innings without taking a single wicket on six occasions - twice against Australia (0-126 in first innings of Sydney Test in 1999-00) and once each against South Africa, Pakistan, West Indies and Sri Lanka. England's Chris Lewis and Andrew Caddick share the second place with 4 such instances.
  3. Kumble has now conceded 100 runs in an innings on 14 occasions against Australia - most such instances by a bowler against Australia. England's Tom Richardson had achieved this dubious distinction on 12 occasions.

“It is easy to believe that life is long and one's gifts are vast -- easy at the beginning, that is. But the limits of life grow more evident; it becomes clear that great work can be done rarely, if at all.” - Alfred Alder

Bored with flaying the fab 4/5.

Excellent perspective Ott. How significant is the latest entry?

Both the captains started the series on a similar note.. Ricky by scoring a century & Kumble by giving them away.

Soulberry,

Earlier our spinners suffered because our pacers did not have the penetration to get the breakthroughs.

Nowadays, it is the other way around.

Conclusion we still lack the firepower to bowl an opposition out twice. This invariably shifts the pressure back to the batsmen.

On centuries. :)

Last series for Kumble?

How many best retirement will be announced before 4th test?

Viswanathan said...

Q,

No one is indispensable. What if someone drops dead?

Q said...

I agree no one is indispensable.. but I think Kumble will announce retirement..

Q,

Better for everyone concerned.

Otts... I can't think of an Indian victory without a Kumble... shucks... no doubt, his dip has come or he is playing around with an injury which seems to be the case for me.

Scorpi,

Yep it is rather sad to see him struggle.

BTW, I believe he has been carrying this rotor cuff injury from last year. Apparently he was planning to retire but was forced to continue as Dravid suddenly stepped down from Captaincy.
